Ok well I'm a college student who's running low on funds & ways to produce the green that makes the world go round. I did some research to figure how to make some quick cash w/o having to be a criminal or belittle myself. I came across becoming a lab rat and thought why not right? I'm healthy & it cant be that bad but I'm confused on how it actually works so it be nice to hear from someone with experience.
A few Q's I have are...
How is the screening period? Lets say I travel to another state b/c their doesnt seem to be any in chicago worth while. How long before I know I'm picked?
& the follow up? How does that work? Do I rent out a hotel while I wait for them to call me back for check ups?
I have more but I don't wanna overwelm everyone all in one post so ill wait to ask more to whomever is kind enough to help out the new guy

Well it depends on the facility. Sometimes you can get a call back the next day or the next week after screening so you should check that & if you don't have any money upfront to travel then don't because depending on your labs you may or may not get into the study however there are hostels in many states so you should check, sometimes the facilities may tell where some are located close to the facility. Hope that answered soing. Best of luck!

If your in Chicago you have 3 phase 1 clinics to choose from...two you can get to with megabus or metra. just came out with one and covance should be getting a lot more in soon since usually they have a few to choose from. Being in school makes it hard to work around your schedule unless you find a OPV (where you just go in for a quick blood draw and your done for the day). I suppose if your will to refrain from turkey, football and family you can go during Thanksgiving break...or winter break for that matter.
Also, keep an eye on Craigs list for smaller studies at University of chicago, Rush or Northwestern. Good luck

Most places there is at least a week, sometimes over two weeks between the time you screen and the time you would start the study. My experience doing a couple studies at Covance Dallas was that they would almost always schedule screenings more than 2 weeks before check-in which sucks if you are not local or you don't know a local whose place you can stay at a while. This was the case also for a study I did at Covance Evansville, so maybe it is a Covance policy.
And some places are not that diligent about telling you if you passed the screening and you can check in for the study; they might give you a call 2 or 3 days before you have to check in. And if you read some of the horror stories on this board, some clinics might not even bother to call you and tell you if the study is cancelled, you may find out after driving 400 miles thinking you are going to check in.
So I would recommend reading any posts here about a clinic to get an idea what you might be in for, and then you should do your best to call or email a clinic to confirm a study AND to confirm that you are in the study, though of course, the crappier clinics make themselves hard to get a hold of. I'm not familiar with the clinics around Chicago so I can't tell you anything specific.
It can be a pain in the ***, but if you can get through the rigmarole, a study can be a relatively quick way to legally get a decent chunk of cash. Good luck.

jasper in kalamazoo is a $50 train ride or $25 bus ride from chi and pays for screenings and is a nice place. the other 3 have been mentioned. usually about a week before you hear if you get in.one you do a couple at the close places, you can save some travel money and start hitting the rest of them. oh and if you drive there's spaulding in west bend wi.
