On the plus side, there is no tax on studies in Canada like there is in the US. That's a big savings but most studies in the US pay pretty well these days so it's still likely better to stay in the US. are you claiming all your allowable expenses? i find after i've substracted my mileage, imputed per diem meal allowance, any actual hotel bills, miscellaneous other expenses, my tax owed on study income is usually under the $12000 personal deduction for federal income tax, and is fairly minimal for fica. i am not your accountant. i used taxhawk this year which doesn't do a good job of explaining whats allowable as deductions from gross self-employment income, but you can research that online and/or use a tax preparer. that's if you do enough studies to consider it a business rather than listing it as "other income". do it which ever way works out cheaper. one of these days i will get my passport and police record and try visiting canada again.

FICA is paid from dollar 1. Federal income tax doesn't start until after you go over the standard deduction of $12K but by the time you hit $12K you have already paid over $1800 in FICA tax. If you make under $12K then you can't go on ACA and have to go on Medicaid instead. You mentioned per diem. Did you know you can only claim per diem on days you are gone from home overnight. You can't claim it if you are just screening and leaving home in the morning and coming back the same day. I do mostly local studies so rarely claim per diem or hotels but have claimed both when I did far away studies.

I had a CRO on my call list having checked their website which did not mention at the time about study applicants from out of the country. However later I checked and they did post that their studies were for citizens. I called their corporate location a few times and finally found many months later that they have an affiliate clinic somewhere in the U.S. but if you are not living there, you cannot go to the CA CRO, only the US one which is somewhere down south (North Carolina, IIRC).

Updating Toronto ever since the Covid health crisis began Lambda seems like they have shutdown their volunteer facilities. I have been to their website and they claim to be doing testing of drugs but from what I have seen not on subjects in Toronto.
I have done 2 studies while this outbreak has occurred and social distancing is enforced and masks are to be worn at all times in the facilities except in the showers and while eating.
Pharma Medica is cheap with the masks and is reluctant to give out a mask to a subject unless totally necessary. But on the plus side sleep facilities are distant and clinics are half full so you have room for yourself.
You will also get a staggered leaving time and entry time so if you have to be somewhere early that might not be possible.

I was wrong about Lambda they are now a new clinical name Novum and have facilities in the United States. With the b being shutdown at the moment Canadian studies can only be done by permanent Canadian residents.
