Take Septa from Philly (Suburban, 30th St., or the station across from Greyhound) to Trenton, and from there to Asbury Park. On the Trenton-Asbury trip, there is a transfer at Rahway. When you get to Asbury park, you can catch the 836 bus from the station to Neptune. Ring the bell for a stop as soon as the bus goes past the Corlies Motel on the right.

A cheaper way I find to get from Philly to Trenton is to take Patco Lindenwold line from Philly to Camden Walter Rand. I catch it at 8th and market but it goes to 16th and Locust as well with intermittent stops along Locust. It's $1.40. At Walter Rand, get on the RiverLine to Trenton that takes 59 minutes for $1.50. It lets you off across the street from Trenton Transportation Center. Cheaper than taking the Septa train to Trenton ($9.00, IIRC). Then proceed from Trenton station to Asbury by NJT train.
