Apparently they are in their right, just as we have the right to turn down the study. It just needs to be in clear writing in the consent form. It is generally recommended that research places cover those costs and it makes them more competitive with other facilities, but they are not obligated to do so. Still, if an injury or infection happened out of a mistake, malpractice, that sort of thing patients have the right to sue and they would likely be offered some sort of settlement.
Other than that, the screening experience was calm, thorough, informative, no feeling one is a part of a herd.

I'm supposed to go out there to screen today. I'm having reservations. They will not cover the cost of any adverse events or injury but I would be responsible for any treatment by John Hopkins...I could end up with a bill instead of a check if soing goes wrong.
