A little about me: I am just getting started in clinical trials . Became unemployed and was doing small outpatient studies until someone told me about Covance and it has ed up a new world of making money.
So I am trying to do more inpatient studies and am hoping to do even more next year.

Wow am I steamed. I was trying to screen into Covance Daytona and since I had been in a study in August I was told by the phone screener that I had to call back on the 10th which I did and the study I wanted to screen for and one that had not even been posted were both full. The worst part is that a person who had been in the same study I had been in was able to screen and got a screening date though they called on Thurs the 8th so why wasn't I able to screen earlier? so now even if they say u can not screen I am going to call back the next day and then the next day. I guess it depends on the screener on the phone whether they let u screen. I only wish now that I would have called back the following day after they told me to wait and I probably could have screened. Now they have no studies available so I guess I have to start looking elsewhere, what a bummer since Covance is only a couple hours away. so I am still learning how to navigate the clinical trial system. So all I can do now is call every morning and every afternoon to see if someone has cancelled their screening date since they do not have a list to call possible alternate screeners from. i am bummed out by am going to call some clinics tomorrow to see if anything available. I do not what to drive to Miami but I might have to.

clinics will lie to you, and recruiting often just doesn't know what's going on, but covance in particular is untrustworthy. you'll get used to it, and cynical, like the rest of us, soon enough. calling twice a day is a workable plan. i hate phones and prefer to only call when i think there is soing, but that's not the best strategy. learn to travel further, screen the first day for high paying studies, don't count on any one clinic.

Great advice. The recruiter told me that the best she could offer was to call everyday morning and afternoon to see if someone has cancelled. But screening does not start until the 21st so there is a chance that someone will find a better study, I hope so. But yes I need to travel a little further and try for the higher paying studies . And I do think that , or realized that, each recruiter says soing a little different so u can get different answers according to who answers the phone. I just have only been to Covance so once I talk to people and find out what clinics are good I will be branching out. I am really enjoying this site and the forum where I have learned a lot about clinical resech.

From my own recent experience, one Covance phone screener told me a study was closed, and later the same day I called for a different matter, and afterward for some reason decided to ask again anyhow. It turns out screening spots for that study were , although when I relayed that information about being told otherwise, I was told that new spots could have been added. Who knows, right? Also, it was the 3rd day out of 4 for screening, and she told me I should be alright for not being an alternate. I have no idea how true that is.
Like Vark, I'm not a big fan of making a lot of phone calls. I suppose once you get "hungry" enough to get in a study, it will become easier. His advice about increasing the amount your willing to travel is important as well. I very recently started looking at both gas costs and flights, and thinking about the risk/reward ratio, and it was like a whole new world(like that Disney song) ed up for me.
I want to encourage anyone reading this not to get discouraged, and to explore all of your options.

Well for a follow up I was able to get a screening visit after all. I called this morning and told nothing available but a friend called me early afternoon telling me they were screening again so I quickly called and got one of the last screening spots. Thank God for study friends who look out for each other. Yes I would like to travel further hopefully with another person to help cover cost of gas and hotel. So I am thinking about driving vs flying etc.
**** I am screening on the last screening day first appt of the morning. I am going to call daily to see if I can move my visit up. Just in case they decide to end screening early. I had already called three places this morning with no studies, out patient but no in patients, so was happy to get a date at Covance. I like the facility it is organized and safe so I am happy to participate there.
Yes do not get discouraged. I am learning everyday and it is getting a little easier and having study friends is a big help so when u are in a study be friendly and keep your ears and if possible get phone numbers even if u just keep in touch thru text message .

By being friendly I mean do not be stand offish , if someone talks to u don't ignore them and try just to get along. It will make your study stay easier. I have to compromise sometimes especially when there is one tv in the room and four women but I don't sweat the small stuff and try to get along with everyone. And be on time for your blood draws , food etc... The employees appreciate not having to go and find u.

There can be a few reasons why someone doesnt get enrolled into a study while a seemingly identical person does. It may be that the recruiter had too much going on that day. Or maybe they weren't sure you met eligibility criteria, wanted to find out for sure and then just got distracted with other things. As someone who has been a recruiter for clinical trials, my suggestion would be to go to that sites website (if they have one) and find a couple of people you could cc on a follow-up email to the recruiter, preferably someone who is the recruiter's supervisor (site manager, director etc). That way the recruiter has to be accountable for follow-up (their supervisor will ask "What happened with that patient who emailed us")? However, if people get nasty via email, neither the recruiter or their supervisor would be inclined to bring them in.

Wekk, you sound like someone I would enjoy interrogating...i mean interviewing, to learn more about what goes on in the mind of recruiters. Feel free to send me a private message, there may be some cash incentive, if you like. By the way, are you named after the beef on wekk sandwich popular in Buffalo, NY?
