Many people are talking about the new PPD facility ing in FABULOUS LAS VEGAS!
I was giving the chance to tour the facility, as many other were and here's my take away...
First and foremost, it must be stated, that LV will be doing BOTH healthy AS WELL AS PATIENT studies. The few beds they have, may at times be filled with later phase studies, not the Phase 1 type that we do.
With that said, it's nice, but VERY small. 2 dorm rooms, 12 beds per room, rooms are similar to the Beach in ATX, 12 seats total in the dining room, 2 public computers, 2 shower stalls (both detachable heads
, the quite room is a hall way but seems comfy. The quality is high, just small. Combine that with the multi phase studies...don't count on moving to Vegas to make a living doing PPD studies any time soon.
They are, of course, testing the waters, if things go well, they may expand. What does this mean for participants? I'd say it means the early participants have a duty to make this a top notch CRO location. Staff is important, but we, the subjects, are equally important in the equation. If there are many screening failures, say dirty UA's, it may taint the clinic, if data integrity is poor, due to tons of lates, it my taint the clinic, if staff and participants or participant/participant don't get along...
Of course, if all goes well, it's likely we'll find an amazing facility grow up in LV.
The cost of doing business in Austin has become stiffling, for both PPD and us. To name a few big ones you already know -- Airfare pricing can vary from $75 each way, one day, to $450+ the next day. Rooms can be insane or even non existent in ATX if there's a festival or event. Compare that to Vegas, flights for $100 or less, most days, from almost anywhere. Rooms are always available somewhere, often as low as $35 a night or get a weekly with a kitchen for $200 a week. As for PPD, I'm sure NV is offering them huge tax incentives & cheaper real estate with lower property taxes.
As for fun, I've lived in both ATX & LV, if you like the strip, it's ALWAYS there, but so is everything else you find in Austin, food, festivals, music, hiking, swimming, shopping, educational opportunities...
