Are there study locations that routinely offer catheters for multiple/excessive draws?
I had a terrible experience in Austin. They decided to train newbie phlebotomists on us on day 1 of a long term IP study, some of whom were uninitiated office staff they decided to cross train. Several bruised the hell out of a bunch of us on day 1, making the rest of the study (some dose days had upwards of 20 draws/day) very painful, frustrating, and we exited the study looking like junkies, even though we used heat, ice, etc to warm up our veins and cool down the swelling.
Would appreciate feedback about any study locations that offer the catheter option for days with multiple blood draws or studies in general.
I heard from someone was one...
Thx!

Most places use catethers. You are better off asking which places don't and avoid those places.

I've screened for other studies after the above experience in Austin. My arm veins were visible and productive when I walked in there and every place I've screened at since has remarked about scarring interfering with normal straight sticks. Luckily an experienced phlebotomist knows how to work with lower arms and hands and subsequent venues used catheters for multiple sticks or I would no longer be able to get past a screen.
Interestingly, addiction sites seem to offer the most info on healing veins damaged by too many sticks, and the prognosis isn't great.
DO NOT let your veins get ruined by inexperienced study staff.

I've been in a few studies with NOCCR Knoxville, and they've used a catheter every time.

Thank you for the replies. I will rephrase here as well, and ask if you can say Yes or NO from personal experience. If you've had a different experience than what is posted below, please shout out here. I'd like tocompile a comprehensive list as a community reference:
The following confirmed they DO NOT USE CATHETERS(via phone confirmation and previous feedback): Pharma Medica (St Charles, MO) Worldwide PPD (Both)
The following confirmed they DO ROUTINELY USE CATHETERS for multiple draws:
WCCT Parexel Baltimore PRA Lenexa Spaulding Pharmaron
The following WOULD NOT OFFER THAT INFO OVER THE PHONE but stated it could be discussed in a screening: Covance Celerion (they won't even discuss the name/# of the drug or known side effects on the phone before screening) Parexel Medpace

I have never seen a catheter used at Spaulding. The only time they use them at is when someone is a 'hard stick' or if the study protocol requires it. I have never had a catheter used on me at Covance Madison or Daytona Beach.

qrs in springfield does.
being subjected to a herd of untrained phlebotomists sounds like an issue that should be reported to the sponsor and irb. it is true that many of these places do train on the job. but if that's not in the consent, a subject could reasonably complain, e.g. allege battery or negligence.

on the one hand that sounds unethical. before i drive 700 miles to celerion, i want to know details. withholding needed info is coercive.
however, dig deeper. ask to speak to the study manager or doctor. don't take no for an answer. they are obligated to answer your questions; when they won't, inform the irb. which does nothing, but still do it.

Covance does straight sticks they DO NOT do catheters. But they are very good at drawing blood of course others better than some but in general I have not had to be restuck even after 17 blood draws and no bruising BUT I put ice on my arm in between draws. So at screening they check yr veins and if they think you will be a difficult stick they won't screen u. I have had them draw from my hand in the past. If needed after dosing they will stick u , if needed, multiple times. No way around it. They need yr blood and will get it one way or another so if you are hard to stick save yourself for another clinic. They said to keep down on possible infection??? The above is Daytona.
