I'm hoping participants as well as clinic staff might read this post.
We've all run into the participants who are D-Bags. There's also the Holy Than All ones who can do no wrong in their own eyes and make sure they point out every FKing thing the don't like about everyone else (even though, they may turn around and do it when it suits them). There's also the staff members who just seem to have a stick up their a$$ all the time and I'm actually hoping this thread helps.
For staff, who allow D-Bags to get on their nerve, and then take out that irritation on other the participants, think about this, 9 out of 10 times the same guys you think are D-Bags, WE ALSO think are D-Bags. Only where as Nursing staff gets to go home every night, we have to stay day in and day out dealing with Mr.DB, and where as for staff they only let half their moronicism show because they're holding back, around us they let it all hang out (UGGGH) so when you (staff) feel like blowing your fuse and you start thinking all the "rats" are whinny, unappreciative so and so's....STOP and realize that we are all individuals, that we are all in this boat together, and chances are that the same Participants who get on your nerves, get on our nerves too, only worse becasue we get the WHOLE attitude package AND w/o a break. So please don't add to the stress and strain by showing your irritation.
For both Nursing Staff and Participants, in my mind (ok it's twisted, I know) we should see each other as a unit, as co-workers with the same goals, which are to successfully complete the current study with minimal discomfort. We are cogs in the same clocks and in to help things go smoothly we should NEVER look at ourselves as two side, in competition. We're not in competition, we both trying to get paid and to do that, we have to complete studies, day in and day out. We have the same goals. Keep the clinic doing good/successful trials so they stay , have plenty of work and PAY us ALL on time.
For both Nursing Staff and Participants, I hope we try to understand what type of stress all the others are going through. Often it may seem that ones job is easier than the others, but everyone has factors that make up holding there end of the bargain, tough. Whether it's lack of sleep, a rude person, being away from loved ones, concerns over money, a stinky or loud mouth roommate, or even to few pair of scrubs and towels (which is not the nurses fault, it's the admin's fault and we all have to deal with it as...a Unit)
We can make this harder than it already is and it can become a repeating cycle = participant is rude to staff = staffs retaliates by being rude to all participants = all participants become rude to staff...pretty soon it's a hostel environment and no one needs that day after day. Just stop, each of us, take person control and try to keep it mellow. And don't feed the fire, I mean you can say "oh you're wrong, staff is great" that's not gonna tone anyone down, however you can say, "yeah, she was being a cunt, but usually she's a sweet heart, I wonder what got her so up set?" AND sometimes you can even go to that staff and say, "Hey, I noticed you seemed a little stress today, you're usually such a sweet heart, what happened?" And let them know that the world isn't against them. Same for nursing staff, when another nurse has a hard day or a trying participant, remind them that there's always one or two, but boy, over all this group is full of troopers, they've been here 2 weeks, are half starved, lonely, haven't had a back rub or a love rub for weeks, have to share toilets showers, clothing, tv's and more, get poked, prodded scanned and bleed out daily, they have kids and lovers who they miss...and they're only half way through. It's amazing they hold it together as well as they do, don't take it personal...come here...gimme a hug
My 2ยข. I don't mean to sound preachy, but when you're as Holy as Me...well someone has to point out whats wrong with everyone else
Oh, wait, I snapped back at staff today for saying some dumb sh't when I ask her a question...ok diegard this whole post, if I can't hold it together, no one can, we're FKD!!!!!!!
